10 kilos order to Norrbyskär - a long day and dreams of a bigger roaster.
Today I spent about 3 hours roasting 10 kilos of beans. Packaged, sealed and delivered strapped on the back of a motorcycle, then by ferry to Norrbyskärs kiosken. A small island town about 40 kilometers south of Umeå. Normally I don't want to deliver Coffee beans the same day I roast them as taste is sub-optimal. But seeing that I missed my wife and kids, I made the exception to get everything done by lunch to head out to Norrbyskär where we have our summer house.
Anyway, after roasting, grounding, and packaging about 30 bags of coffee, I couldn't help but dream about when I will have a larger roaster. Even a 2 kilo roaster would speed up my process considerably.. But imagine a 6 kilo or 10 or even a 30 kilo roaster! Plus machines that automatically weigh, put labels on and seal packaging as well. I do like machines...
With that said, at the moment, I enjoy the process of the 1kg roaster, and it's not like I'm filling 100 kilo orders daily.. so everything has a time and place. Right now I am just figuring out what kind of business I want. I realize after running Backpackinglight as long as I have that I enjoyed the younger days more. When the business was just me a laptop and not a care in the world. These days everything is so big I have no idea what's going on everywhere at all times. And the constant pressure of monthly reporting and so on. What started as an enjoyable hobby has become a monster that threatens to swallow me. Bud's beans is my escape.
Though I really do like the idea of running a big roasting machine, playing with recipes and finding new coffee farms to visit. In any case, Norrbyskärsrost started as an idea to combine different beans from different regions and make a nice medium roast out of it. But I found I really loved the simplicity and quality of a single source. In this case I loved the overall quality of the Columbian beans that I got a hold of. So I decided to go with that instead, a bit more expensive, but the quality is un-matched. I played with a view different roasts, but landed on a light-medium roast with a 23% development time that I think really brings out the flavor of the beans without the acidity of a straight on light roast or the blandness of the straight medium roast.
Any way, I hope you enjoy the roast! you can either buy them out at Norrbyskär or here at beanroasters.se
